New Things
I had two interesting experiences this weekend. First was the offering song. I was asked by my pastor last weekend to play the offering song this weekend. I had a song on my heart so I was into it except for the part where I didn't have a piano to practice on this week. So I emailed my pastor let him know where I was at with it all and figured i was off the hook. Today I came in and one of the women in the church asked me if I was singing a song for offering. I said no but thought maybe I should check on whether I was playing offering. Turns out that I was still on the agenda. We were just waiting for the regular keyboard player to show up with the keyboard so I could practice. I got a new song on my heart. Not really new actually but quite old. I couldnt' get "May the Words of My Heart" out of my head. I even asked God for a new song because I've played that song for offering years earlier. Nothing else came to mind so when my opportunity to practice came up, I played that song, shaky fingers and all. Then I was reminded of all the times in the past when I've been asked to play songs for offering with no practice or even a worship set without practicing. That's when I knew I could pull off an offering song even if I made it up on the spot. But I was annoyed with myself for being nervous. I decided even though I wasn't singing the words for the offering, I was going to keep them in my head and remind myself that I wasn't playing for me or the congregation. In the end, it was fine with only minor errors.
My other new thing was my driving. I have plans to go look at a motorbike this week that is completely automatic-much easier for me I think. So I figured I should practice driving-like on the street. Until now, I had only driven in a parking lot. I don't have a parking lot at my new place so I decided I would take the motorbike to the laundry place down the street. It required me to go down the street and down another street and finally on the street with the laundry. The getting there was easier especially when I relaxed. I even shifted to the next gear. The reason it was easier was because it was all left turns. Keep in mind that we drive on the left side here. Coming back, I decided to do the shorter more practical route which meant making right turns including one on a busy intersection. While that freaked me out, I didnt' hit anything or anybody and navigated it ok. I also did this while strattling one of my laundry bags. My other bag rode in the basket. I now have the confidence to try driving other places. I'm not sure I'm ready for the city yet but the other streets aren't so bad. Now at least when I go to look at the other motorbike, I can drive it without looking like I've never driven before. Why on earth would I want to drive a motorbike in the first place? Well, sometimes it is hard to get songthaews and tuk tuks to take me where I need to go. It took me 3 to 4 tries just to get one to take me to the dentist last week. The first time was 3 but the 2nd time was more. Its also much easier to navigate the road on a motorbike than a car since motorbikes can go many places and cars cannot. Will I still use other transportation? Most likely as I don't like the idea of driving in a downpour and I do still like walking.
